Lansing United midfielder Rafa Mentzingen has been named the Mitre National Player of the Week as announced by the NPSL today.

Mentzingen earned the award after his two-goal performance at Grand Rapids FC on Saturday, June 10. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, native’s second goal of the night served as the game-winner as United took down Grand Rapids, 4-2, to move to 6-1-0 on the season.

“This award means a lot to me and for Lansing United,” Mentzingen said. “We are off to a great start and I’m pleased to being able to help the team with goals and good performances.”

The speedy Brazilian has made his presence known in every match he’s played in this season. Mentzingen sits second in the entire NPSL in goals with nine and has done so in just six matches, scoring in all of them. He also ranks first on his team in multi-goal games (3), shots (27) and shots on goal (13).

Mentzingen already features prominently in the United record books just midway through his first season with the club. He is third all-time in goals and is only two behind the single-season record set by Matt Brown, who scored 11 in 2014. The former Bryan College standout and future Valparaiso University player is also tied for sixth in United history in shots and tied for fifth in shots on goal.

“Rafa has continually performed at an elite level this season,” United head coach Nate Miller said. “He thoroughly deserves this award and his teammates are to credit as well. We look forward to Rafa helping propel this team to new heights.”

Mentzingen is the third Lansing player to win the NPSL’s Player of the Week award, joining Matt Brown and Brian Cunningham, who won it in back-to-back weeks during the 2014 season.
