All 21 United players saw action in season opening friendly

Head coach Nate Miller knows the end result is not the most important piece of a friendly. Lansing United’s 3-2 win over Ann Arbor F.C. is only the starting point.

Twenty-one United players saw the field in the opening game against Ann Arbor F.C. Defenders Nick Strack and Alex Garner played the full 90 minutes, while forward Tumi Moshobane saw just 90 seconds of action. “This week is huge,” Miller said. “We need the tune up. We need to see what guys look like.”

Four-year veteran and captain James DeCosemo set the tone in the Lansing United friendly. DeCosemo scored United’s first goal of the season in the 2nd minute of the game, while his second goal came in the 34th minute. Rafa Mentizingen assisted on DeCosemo’s first goal, then scored himself with a chip over the keeper in the 43rd minute. Mentizingen’s speed excited the crowd throughout the first half, creating scoring opportunities for the Hoops.

“We love our supporters,” Miller stated. “It’s great for the new guys to see what that’s like and what the expectations are. It’s good for us to do a dry run at home before everything really starts to matter.”

The 3-0 lead at halftime allowed Miller to experiment with new lineups. “We couldn’t play like this in our league opener,” Miller said. “It’s kind of an interesting time. On Monday we welcome a lot of important players.”

Lansing United opens the NPSL Sunday, May 14, at the Milwaukee Torrent.
