Brian Cunningham scored in the 51st minute and Tyler Pasher assisted on the game-winning goal as the Midwest, led by Lansing United head coach Eric Rudland, defeated the West region, 2-1, at the National Premier Soccer League combine Saturday.

“The entire Midwest region was well represented,” Rudland said. “Our Lansing United boys were fantastic, as Cunningham had the equalizer and Pasher had the winning assist. Godwin (Addai) and Cody (Archibald) were critical components in the team’s defensive schemes.

“All and all, it was a great first game, but hopefully we can be better tomorrow.”

Cunningham’s goal tied the match at one after the West scored first in the 43rd minute to take the lead.

“I saw the West’s goalkeeper cheating a little bit to pick it up if I crossed it, and I wanted to sneak it beside him,” said Cunningham, who had three goals with United in the 2014 season. “The angle was super close but I thought I could pull it off. Credit to (the Indiana Fire’s) Nago (Mbengue) for seeing my run and playing me through.”

The Midwest took the lead in the 66th minute on a goal by FC Buffalo’s Bobby Ross.

The win advanced the Midwest to the combine championship match against the South region. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Broward Community College in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
