This is a big weekend for the Lansing United Women’s team as they look to remain unbeaten in the 5th week of play and hope to pick up six points.

The team will continue its successful inaugural season with a road game against the Fort Wayne Gryphons tonight at 7:00 p.m and then continue weekend play with a home debut at East Lansing Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

United (2-0-1) moved into third place after a huge victory over Indy FC where five players put the ball in the back of the net, showcasing the team’s talented array of players.

Fort Wayne (0-1-1) will be looking for their first victory of their season after a loss to their in-state rivals Indy FC and a tie against Genesee FC last weekend.

Lansing Midfielder Riko Sagara was named to the UWS Team of the Week for Week IV after earning two assists in the Victory over Indy FC.

“If my teammates had not scored I wouldn’t have gotten on the list,” Sagara said.

When it comes to her composed and technical style of play she imagines Spanish pro soccer player Andrés Iniesta.

“That’s all it is,” Sagara said. “I always watch Iniesta playing on youtube and he has given me some ideas for the angle of a pass or effective dribbling.”

Sagara leads the team with 3 assists and has started every Lansing game.

“Riko is really talented at pulling the strings in the midfield and getting other players involved,” head coach Jason Crist said. “I think in the Indy game she helped us control the midfield and really picked some players. Obviously, she picked Anna [Stinson] out in the first minute and put us in behind. She’s Just a really nice player and when she’s informed it really makes the team better.”

With six points up for grabs this weekend, two victories could put United in first place of the Midwest conference.

Kickoff for Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Indiana Tech University located in Fort Wayne, Ind.

With United’s four-game road streak under wraps, the team will return to home turf and play their home opener against the Michigan Stars (2-1-1) who will be coming off a tie against Grand Rapids FC.

“Being on the road is fun because you’re on the bus, but I think people are ready to wear the sweet light blue hoops,” Crist said.“They’re ready to go.”

The women’s debut at Archer Stadium will be a historical game for the team as fans will get to attend their first ever Lansing United Women’s home match.

“It’ll be fun to play in front of the Ransom and have a home crowd, we’re looking forward to that,” Crist said.

United staffers will be on-site for the away match, so supporters who are unable to make the match can stay updated on the club’s twitter and Facebook. We’ll see you on Sunday, June 10th at 4:00 pm in Archer Stadium for some homecookin’.
