U.S. Open Cup Preview: United vs. RWB Adria

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will kick off for 42 teams across the country on Wednesday night, including a historic first appearance for Lansing United.

The Hoops will make their debut in the competition when they host Red, White and Blue Adria of the newly formed Great Lakes Premier League at 7pm at the East Lansing Soccer Complex.

Chicago-based RWB Adria is no stranger to the competition, appearing for the third-straight season and fifth overall in club history. In 2014, they advanced all the way to the third round, defeating Detroit City FC on penalties, the Michigan Bucks in extra time, before falling to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

“Very sound, a lot of ex-pros in their team,” said United head coach Eric Rudland. “They’re going to be very patient in the attack, very sound defensively. They play probably 60 to 70 games together each year since they play fall, spring and summer down in Chicago. So they’re very seasoned together and we know it will be a tough match.”

The U.S. Open Cup is a straight one-game knockout format, meaning that there will be a result on Wednesday even if it takes extra time or penalties. A core of Lansing players do have some important experience in the high pressure environment after last season’s NPSL regional playoffs, when United needed extra time to defeat the Fort Pitt Regiment in the tournament final.

“We have to leave it all out there because it’s not a friendly like these last couple games,” said Gabe Mateo, who scored the extra time winner in the Midwest Region final. “We’re going to have to come out with a different attitude and go out there knowing that it could be our last (game in the Cup). I’m looking forward to seeing who our core guys are going to be, it’s going to be exciting.”

The winner of the matchup will host Louisville City FC on Wednesday, May 20. Tickets for all U.S. Open Cup matches are $10 for both kids and adults. This match is not part of the season ticket package, so each fan must have a ticket for admission. Advance tickets can be purchased online for the match.
